It's black & white, so you have to take the eye colour on faith. Similarly, the way sexuality is handled is by suggestion rather than explicitness, although I'm sure this was somewhat shocking in its day. The performances are solid (Lynn Redgrave has a memorable debut as the girl's best friend), and it's a mostly quiet character piece. I appreciate that there's not a traditional Happily Ever After, since that wouldn't be right for this couple. Edna O'Brien adapted her novel The Lonely Girl, and Desmond Davis directed.
