Wild Mountain Thyme

Wild Mountain Thyme
Likely Story etc.

Romance

This movie has charm, humor, and lovely scenery, but I'm not sure if the story (adapted by director John Patrick Shanley from his play Outside Mullingar) entirely works.  I wanted to love it but ended up just liking it.  Still, on this project, that's nothing to complain about.

The story, based on Sonora Webster Carver's memoir A Girl and Five Brave Horses, is OK but the acting's not very good.  Steve Miner directed, the year before Forever Young.

Not only unfunny and sometimes pointlessly frantic, but crawling with toxic masculinity (including lack of consent). However, the 3D animation isn't bad.  Steve 'Spaz' Williams directed and co-wrote.

Amateurish (especially the acting), but at least the first quarter hour wasn't that gory.  Director Gregory Lamberson adapted the novel by the father-and-son duo Billy and Richard Chizmar.

I'm not a Scorsese fan (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore aside), but I guess it's interesting that this exists.

This doesn't live up to the potential of its premise or its cast, but it's worth a look.  George Zaloom directed and co-wrote.

*Despite the tagline and that picture, the romance is less important here than the dynamics between and within families.

I didn't like or care about any of the characters, but I'm not shocked that there was a sequel.  Jonathan Lynn directed, after Clue and Nuns on the Run.

I liked this movie a lot more than I expected, with that title and its bleak setting of working-class 1975 Brooklyn.  But there is enough warmth, humor, and even hope to carry through the rough patches.  John Gray wrote and directed.
