I know this is supposed to be a "family" movie and I guess eventually a living dinosaur shows up, but the quarter hour I watched was a domestic drama, about an annoying, unhappily married, white couple in Africa, and he (no longer the Greatest American Hero) swears a lot, yes, in a Disney-by-another-name movie of the '80s.  I tuned out after the African pilot said he'd "whip the bitch" if it was his wife.  Bill Norton directed.

The Babette of the title is the surprisingly French servant of two old-maid sisters in 19th-century Denmark, but we have to flash back to the sisters' youth, when they were beautiful and courted, to explain Babette's presence, except I didn't care enough to continue.  I will say the look of the film, especially the sets, is great.

I have to admit that I was disappointed in this, given the cast (there are those I didn't tag because they weren't in the first quarter hour, like Tommy Kirk), and it was in fact Annette's personal favorite of her movies.  First we get a ventriloquism act by Mother Goose, then a salute to lemonade, and next the villains musically scheming.  Annette dances a little but is more of a McGuffin (she's an heiress who the hero and the main villain want to marry) than an actual character.

I've never seen the first movie, although at the time I kept meaning to, but I have read the Dick King-Smith children's book, and this movie, which includes a farmer's wife falsely accused of drug smuggling, seems literally and figuratively far afield from the original idea of a "sheep-pig."  Not that this is bad, but I'm shocked that Gene Siskel chose it as the best movie of the year.

This presents itself as a mockumentary, although it doesn't really have the look or sound of a documentary, and I couldn't help wondering how it would've fared in the hands of, well, Christopher Guest, or as a straight-up comedy without all that talking to the camera.  The only character I didn't find annoying was the one played by Cuoco, and that wasn't much of a stretch from Penny on The Big Bang Theory.  Ellie Kanner directed.

Shuki Levy directed, co-wrote, and produced this pretty bad children's movie, where Ted is a teddy bear (but not a foul-mouthed one like in the Seth MacFarlane movies that came out later) and Aussie is an Australian-accented-in-voiceover dog.  Not much happens in the first quarter hour, so I have no idea if the "adventure" ever gets "great."  To be honest, I was more intrigued by the trailer for a Francis the Talking Mule remake (also from '09), with Ice-T as the "cool mule," but sadly my library does not own it.  (I am fervently hoping I get to review A Talking Cat!?! when we reach the T's in a few years.)

This is based on the Ian McEwan novel, which I've never read, so I don't know how many of the flaws are in the original story and how many come from the adaptation by Christopher Hampton, or from director Wright's interpretation.  I will say that I think the acting, cinematography, music, costumes, hair, and sets are top-notch.  It's when it comes to the plot and characterization that things start to fall apart.  Wright on his commentary even admits he's not sure if certain scenes come across the way they're meant to.

Briony is the main character and as always Ronan is excellent, here as the 13-year-old version.  However, it's never clear how much of the story we're watching onscreen is "real" and how much is Briony's reimagining.  She's a writer her whole life and a particular story, one she tells rather than writes, ruins the lives of many people, most importantly to her and supposedly the viewer, the lives of her sister Cecelia and Robbie, the young man that Briony once had (still has?) a crush on and that Cecelia loves, despite class differences.

Image result for atonement lolaWhen Briony's slightly older (14? 15?) cousin Lola (Juno Temple) is raped by a houseguest, Briony accuses Robbie, and Lola doesn't dispute it.  Years later, Lola marries her actual rapist.  Very little time is spent on this thread, to the point that I said aloud, "What about Lola?"  Instead, we're treated to an extended section on Dunkirk, which of course is beautifully shot etc., but doesn't really tie into anything, except on I guess the theme of the waste of life and lives.  Who is Lola really?  Was she initially attracted to her rapist and then felt guilty for his crime?  Why does she eventually marry him?  It's not like this is a theocracy, where the rapist would "make amends" through marriage; in fact, no one but he, Lola, and Briony know that he's guilty.  I'm sorry, but I would've liked more resolution for this, and it actually made it harder to care about Cecelia and Robbie.

Furthermore, the "atonement" of the title is Briony as a dying, elderly woman writing the "truth" about what happened, except for a happy ending she gives Robbie and Cecelia, who both died in 1940 and were never reunited.  But a novel published more than 60 years later doesn't help them, and it seems there only so Briony can forgive herself for doing something unforgivable.

Anyway, a "good" but deeply flawed movie that I've given a lot of thought to this week (since I also watched the extras) and ultimately I will marginally recommend it.

I might've gone with a C but it bugged me that the main character (voiced by Michael J. Fox) thinks that runes correspond enough to English that misreading one sign would change "Iceland" to "Ireland."  This has an opening with the sinking of Atlantis, but seems to be mostly set in 1914, and I felt like it was more like comedy than drama, so "historical comedy" for that tag.

As with Astro Boy, I gave this twenty minutes rather than fifteen, because I really liked Lewis's "The Navy Gets the Gravy But the Army Gets the Beans" song.  Martin's character is much less interesting, except for his habit of mooching cigarettes while tucking one behind his ear.  I guess this is technically a "historical comedy" for its time, since it's set during World War II, but as with Casablanca (which is set before the U.S. joined the war) , the period is close enough.

This Hong-Kong-American production is based on the manga series, which I've never read, although I feel like I saw some of the 1963 TV series growing up in the '70s, but it wasn't as memorable as Speed Racer.  This movie isn't bad as these things go, and I like the touches of political and other satire, especially in the opening "educational film" sequence, narrated by Bell.  Still, I didn't feel enough invested in the characters or story to continue beyond twenty minutes.

Sam Levinson (son of Barry) wrote and directed this movie that came out just over a year ago but honestly feels more dated than Gidget.  The teen-girl narration may make you think you're in for something like Juno or Easy A, but darker than Heathers, especially with the "trigger warnings" montage.  Instead, it turns into some sort of "Oh, those wild teenagers" shocker like a "flaming youth" movie from the 1920s, but with "modern" technology.  That would all be fine, if we could care about or even distinguish between the various teens.  Still, it's stylish enough for a D+.

I gave this a half hour because I kept thinking that it would, well, go somewhere.  But after about six minutes of Edward R. Murrow doing the prologue, including clips from Méliès's A Trip to the Moon, we get to the actual story but even that takes another twenty minutes or so for set-up.  I still might've stuck it out but the inclusion of buying a not-in-the-book balloon, when one is available for rent, just annoyed me.  So I missed all the cameos that are supposed to be later and am just tagging the people I recognized in the first half hour.  (No, that doesn't include Catinflas.)

The first one hundred movies on this blog

Image result for 100Well, we're one hundred movies in and I think it's fair to say that the success rate, of C+ or higher, is the worst on any of my blogs.  Breaking it down, there are four F+s, nine D-s, 14 D's, and 19 D+s, which is almost half of the total.  Then there's a whopping 27 C-s, almost a quarter!  Things taper off to 15 C's before we get to the four C+s, four B-s, and three Bs that I could actually sit through.

The breakdown on decades is also very different than my other blogs, with one from the 1920s, six from the '30s, two from the '40s, and then eleven from the '50s, before falling off again for four from the '60s, and two from the '70s.  Then there's a rise, with eleven for the '80s, sixteen for the '90s, and 27 for the 2000s, before dropping some for the 20 from the 2010s.  I expect these stats at least to morph over time.

As for the genres, 17 were "action movies," although watching an "action collection" early on obviously skewed this.  Seventeen movies were also "comedies," but 25 were "dramas," not counting the 16 "historical dramas" and so on.  Bear in mind that many movies fit in more than one genre.

Other noteworthy things: Warner Bros. easily had the most movies, 16, although classifying what studio is responsible for a film gets more complicated in the modern era, when more than one can be responsible for production and/or distribution.  Alec Guinness was in more movies than anyone, four, but the "Alec Guinness collection" obviously affected that, as did Hitchcock directing four movies on the "Alfred Hitchcock collection."  Eight of the films were British, which seems a little low.  And nineteen movies were based on books, but I don't know if this is typical.

I did notice a higher percentage of movies with the director writing or at least co-writing, more than on my "movies I own" blog and more than on my "TV shows from the library" blog.  I expect that to continue.

This is both a story of a down-to-earth real-life regular guy who writes comic books about that life, and a sometimes surreal blending of comic-book style (a bit like the later Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and "documentary" realism that includes the actual people being documented, sometimes in the same frame with their portrayers.  It's also quite funny but with dramatic moments, including about cancer.  And it captures its place (mostly Cleveland) and times (1950 to the present, but mostly '75 to about '87).  Still, I can't go higher on the grade because I wasn't wowed and I didn't "enjoy" being in that world exactly.

Shout-out to Friedlander, whom I'd only seen as 30 Rock's Frank but who here becomes almost indistinguishable from the real Toby Radloff (who agrees).  Josh Hutcherson, who just has a small role in the opening scene as Robin (he would've been about nine at the time of shooting) would grow up to be Peeta in the Hunger Games movies.  Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini co-wrote and co-directed.

I remember loving this movie at the time, charmed by its whimsicality.  Watching it again, I still like it but its flaws are more obvious.  Amélie (played very well by Tautou) is very introverted but she decides to help other people, mostly secretly.  Sometimes she succeeds, but even within the film it's clear that matchmaking a stalker and a hypochondriac is not going to work out.  She never has to pay any consequences, but then she doesn't always reap the rewards.  I'm reluctantly using the "romance" tag, although she and her potential boyfriend spend more time solving puzzles and chasing after each other than actually getting to know each other.  (Or I guess this is how they get to know each other.)  The garden gnome thread though is still great, and I love the look of the film, from her neo-flapper hairdo to the enriched greens and reds.  The narration mostly works, giving the story more of a "timeless" literary quality, although there are many references to Lady Diana (pronounced "Dee").

Gorgeous nature shots can't save the dopey story and subpar acting, although I did cut this a little slack as a kids' movie.  Christopher Cain directed.  Note that this movie offers a good example of how casual airports were in the pre-9/11 era, especially onscreen.

A bitter old musician tells his life story to a sympathetic priest, but I couldn't listen to more than a quarter hour, although I sort of liked this movie as a teenager.  Not that it was bad this time, and I liked the touches of humor, but I wasn't really drawn in enough to wait around for the title character as an adult.  Milos Forman directed.

This is just dreadful and is only saved from an F because I laughed my head off for over a minute at poor Freeman's line, "Vickie, forgiving yourself is the one thing no one can do for themselves."  Then Vickie just gives him a look like she wishes she was back on Amen.  The movie is based on the James Patterson novel and directed with a sledgehammer by Lee Tamahori.  And, no, I haven't seen Kiss the Girls, its predecessor.
