Although I'm using the documentary tag, I do have to admit that this feels both staged and awkward. That is, it has the messiness and lack of meaning of real life, but the five "real" teens who are profiled all fit neatly into cliches and (at least in the first quarter hour) never step outside those boxes. And yet, I remember liking this movie at the time of its release and I didn't hate it now. It's just average, and pales in comparison to American Splendor, which is both realer and more surreal. Nanette Burstein directed and "wrote."
