The Babette of the title is the surprisingly French servant of two old-maid sisters in 19th-century Denmark, but we have to flash back to the sisters' youth, when they were beautiful and courted, to explain Babette's presence, except I didn't care enough to continue. I will say the look of the film, especially the sets, is great.
Gabriel Axel directed and wrote the screenplay, based on the Karen Blixen (AKA Isak Dinesen) short story.
