This is super '80s, from the Wang Chung soundtrack to the voiceover of Reagan blathering about taxes to the extremely stereotypical Islamic Terrorist.  The counterfeiting sequence was my unironic favorite in the first quarter hour.  Director Friedkin helped Gerald Petievich adapt Petievich's novel, years after The Boys in the Band and The Exorcist.

I've seen this movie a few times over the years, including I think on the big screen in the past twenty years.  I gave the Harper Lee novel a B eleven years ago (https://rereadingeverybookiown.blogspot.com/2012/06/to-kill-mockingbird.html) and I thought I might give the film one as well.  But, while I think the adaptation, by Horton Foote, is still pretty good, I felt less drawn in this time.  It's a combination of how the central tragedy happens mostly offscreen and the way that other characters, including Dill and his aunt, are not as fully developed as they could be.  (They probably were more so in the book, but I don't recall.)  The two main performances, by Oscar-winning Gregory Peck and non-child-actress Mary Badham as his daughter, remain strong and the movie did mostly hold my interest throughout.  This time, even on a TV screen, I was really impressed by the sets.

Robert Mulligan directed.

I reluctantly saw this months after it came out, when it was still in theaters, with a wisecracking friend who had seen it before.  This time, I just gave it the first quarter hour, not caring about the modern-day characters, which is why I'm not listing this as a historical drama and/or romance.  As everyone knows, James Cameron wrote and directed.

I would say I was more interested than entertained.  Director David Lean co-adapted Noël Coward's play, and I can actually see this working better onstage, where it wouldn't feel so odd to have scenes with characters referred to as being nearby.  (Including the neighbor lady we never meet, although we see her husband and son.)  Still, this domestic drama, set in 1919 to '39, is more my kind of movie than The Bridge Over the River Kwai or Lawrence of Arabia.

This is what I call a popcorn movie, nothing fancy, not particularly filling, but in its own way somewhat satisfying, even if some of it gets stuck in your teeth.  I have to note that, like most movies that look nostalgically back at the late '80s (e.g. The Wedding Singer, Romy & Michele), the soundtrack is more early '80s, because pop music was better in the first half of that decade.  Gary Winick directed, six years before the weaker Letters to Juliet.

While there are times that this is quite good, I also considered stopping watching it a half dozen times.  The central performance(s) of the title character, a "girly boy" who grows up to be a Cher drag queen, is generally solid, but some of the supporting performances are amateurish.  The zigzagging timeline is both intriguing and off-putting, and there are definitely some sad and/or dark moments.  It was worth watching once, but I don't know that I'd want to see it again.

One of the saddest parts is the end credit that this is dedicated to the memory of writer-director Margo Pelletier, who died of cancer in the November after this debuted in film festivals.

Although I'm definitely someone who's generally more interested in the domestic/romantic/personal side of people's lives more than their accomplishments, I do feel if you're going to make a movie about Stephen Hawking, there should be more of him developing and explaining his theories.  And if you are going to go for the personal side, it would be nice if the children were more than just props.  That said, there is a lovely, complicated portrait of his eventual ex-wife, Jane, whose Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen this is somewhat based on.  James Marsh directed, about four years before The Mercy, which has good period details, like this, but a much less interesting story.
