Based on the Ernest K. Gann novel and directed by Ralph Nelson, this is a character study (of more than one character besides the pilot), a war drama, a war comedy, an action movie, a romance, a bromance, and above all a mystery.  It can be a bit slow at times but is definitely worth watching for that payoff at the end.  And, of course, Suzanne Pleshette (then 27) is wonderful.

I used to watch the TV show as a kid, but I don't think I've ever seen the movie before, so I was surprised by the lack of charisma of Ford and Howard, together and separately.  This is based on the Mark Toby novel, and surprisingly directed by Vincente Minnelli.
