To be honest, I'm surprised it's not worse than it is, with this concept.  Wilder co-wrote, and Arthur Hiller directed, a couple years after Outrageous Fortune, which has some of the same problems of shrillness and pathetic humor.

I've been curious about this movie since the time, so 35 years, but watching it today it just feels shrill and unfunny.  However, I could see it working as a "dumb comedy" with better writing and direction.  Arthur Hiller directed, seventeen years after Love Story.

The horses are pretty but Robert Taylor is wooden, the story not that interesting.  This is based on the book The Dancing White Horses of Vienna by Alois Podhajsky.  Arthur Hiller directed seven years before Love Story, a much more famous adaptation.

I had this on VHS long ago and for all I know might still.  The thing is, the "best" thing about it, the kitsch, isn't worth the experience, and you're probably still better off reading the MAD parody.  Anyway, this time watching the first quarter hour I thought, one, there's a difference between witty banter and an insult exchange, and two, that is way too much hockey.  This is based on the Eric Segal book, which I think I did read at some point.  Arthur Hiller directed.
