With a lighter touch, this could've been a delightful farce, or something like one of Hitchcock's wittier mysteries. Director Anthony Minghella adapted the Patricia Highsmith novel.
I really liked this at the time, but now I can see the many weaknesses in the script. Still, the premise remains intriguing and the soundtrack has aged well. Peter Howitt wrote and directed.
Vaguely creepy. David Hare based this on Bernhard Schlink's novel, and it's directed by Stephen Daldry, who also did The Hours and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, quite the track record.
