A woman understandably likes her dog better than the people around her, and then the dog dies. Mike White wrote and directed, seven years after he starred in Chuck & Buck.
While this is at times funny and/or touching, I'm not sure how well it works to deliberately go against the usual "serious historical drama" directing approach. I might've preferred this as a book, or even the writer-director Madeleine Olnek's original stageplay. Still, definitely worth watching, and thinking about.
I enjoyed this movie enough in the theater to see the second one (which I liked less) but on DVD, especially without the delighted surprise of recognizing the voice actors, I didn't care as much, although, as with Hop, the look is better than the story. Genndy Tartakovsky directed.
