While the scenery is lovely and there are aspects of the story I like, the grandfather that the protagonist loves and that the audience is supposed to love is so sexist and otherwise awful, I considered stopping the movie a few times. Director Niki Caro adapted Witi Ihimaera's novel, thirteen years after McFarland, USA, which was much worse.
