How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days

Romcom
DVD
C+

I enjoyed this at the time, when I was about 35.  This time, I didn't find it particularly funny and I didn't think Hudson and McConaughey had much romantic chemistry.  Yet it is sort of fascinating as a demonstration of romcom tropes.  All of this (including the New York setting and the gamesmanship) was done much better in Down with Love, which came out a few months later, and that takes place in a highly stylized version of the early '60s.  Still, it's hard to dislike a movie that led to a brilliant Scaramucci joke (by Hudson herself).

Oddly enough, this is based on a cartoon book, by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long.  Donald Petrie directed.

I enjoyed this at the time and did end up watching the whole thing this time, but I do find it uneven and not as enjoyable as the '80s television series, or the books, not that I was a huge fan of either.  Some of the jokes fall flat, and Zaphod wears thin quickly, but the look is of course great and Stephen Fry's narration is almost worth the price of admission in itself (or this time the almost two hours of my extremely valuable time).  And, yes, this scores pretty high on the Harry Potter Cast graph.  Garth Jennings directed.

Although I didn't laugh out loud at this, except for at one of the reaction shots of the Reagans in the 1988 prologue, I can see how someone might think it was hilarious, and I've certainly seen worse comedies, especially for this project.  I tuned out before Christopher Walken showed up.

Thomas Lennon co-wrote and appears as Karl Wolfschtagg.  Robert Ben Garant directed.
