There are flaws in the acting (especially the female love interest) and writing (some loose ends and plotholes), but the charm and the music help a lot.  Note that John Leguizamo was actually 45 when he played young Antonio!  (And Elizabeth Peña was 46 as the "older woman.")  Renée Chabria wrote and directed.

I've seen at least some of this once before, close to its release, and it remains weird, that is creative but not necessarily enjoyable.  This time I tuned out before Juliet actually showed up, and I didn't even see that much of Romeo in the first quarter hour.  Director Baz Luhrmann helped adapt Shakespeare.

I would've given this a C- as a dumb comedy but there was too much gratuitous racism.  John Leguizamo stars and co-wrote, while Paul Miller directed.  This was apparently inspired by the still well-known Richard Connell short story "The Most Dangerous Game" (1924), but I much prefer the Gilligan's Island version.
