I remember watching, or at least trying to watch this years ago and I definitely got past the quarter hour I gave it today.  I just wasn't invested in this meaner version of Mary Poppins.  Emma Thompson not only stars as the title character but adapted Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda books.  Kirk Jones directed.

I tried to keep an open mind about this, since after all I still own and sometimes watch a few of Woody Allen's '70s movies.  And the premise is promising, the cast likable.  (I tuned out before Emma Stone actually showed up.)  However, I found the exposition bloated, with details being explained multiple times in the first quarter hour.

I might be able to buy Firth as a New York publisher in this British-American production, but Law's Southern accent as writer Thomas Wolfe is truly laughable.  This is based on A. Scott Berg's book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius, and directed by Michael Grandage.
