Even at the time, this was a lesser successor to The Muppet Movie (1979).  Watching it now, I winced at some of the jokes and found the songs unmemorable, although the energy is high, and I did like the photo of Kermit and Fozzie's father.  Jim Henson directed and of course voices Kermit and others.

Kind of dull love story between Johnson and Taylor, just after World War II (and thus a historical drama even nine years later).  This is based on the Fitzgerald short story "Babylon Revisited," and directed by Richard Brooks, who co-wrote and would direct Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof four years later.

I gave this a half hour but I just felt like there was too much about the friend of Dan's foster father (Jack Oakie doing unfunny shtick, including about the black maid saying "you all") and not enough about Jo and her school.  Also, since when is Professor Bhaer Swiss?  But Elsie the Cow getting a prominent screen credit is probably the weirdest thing here.  Norman Z. In one of her best roles ever, 75-year-old Tomlin is hilarious and moving as an aging lesbian poet trying to help her granddaughter raise money for an abortion.  The supporting cast is all around solid, with Sam Elliott a particular stand-out as a surprising ex.  Note, I loved the spin that this movie puts on the "your baby has fingernails" moment in Juno.  Also, I like all the different areas of Los Angeles that are shown in this story that takes place in just one day.  Paul Weitz wrote and directed nine years after the far inferior American Dreamz.  (But I do like Admission, and somewhat American Pie.)

I don't know if it's the influence of "reality TV" and documentaries or what, but modern historical dramas often have a flattening, distancing technique.  I saw it in The Front Runner (about Gary Hart) and I see it here in this story of Edward R. Murrow and Joseph McCarthy.  It's not just that this is in black & white, but some shots are through windows and from odd angles.  The acting, like in Chappaquiddick, is also distant, even in emotional scenes.  Anyway, I can see why this was so acclaimed, but it's not for me.  (The German Good Bye, Lenin, in contrast, makes us care about the characters while painlessly presenting then recent history.)  Clooney directed, co-wrote, and plays Fred Friendly.
