I've been avoiding this film for years (partly because I know people I respect who love it), but when the first three minutes was literally nothing-- interrupted briefly by the MGM logo so I was reassured that my TV didn't suddenly break-- that did not bode well. I'm putting "historical drama," since I didn't make it out of the technically prehistoric "Dawn of Man" sequence. I would've gone with an F+ or D- but I will admit that some of the landscape shots are good. Kubrick directed and wrote the screenplay based on the Arthur C. Clarke short story "The Sentinel."
